Job Search
So, you’re finally graduating and thinking about your upcoming job.
There is an art to this search and there are also negotiating topics as well!
The attendings here at Crozer are always going the extra mile to help us secure good terms for our future employment. You’ve worked so hard to get to this milestone, make sure you get the best situation for your job going forward!
Don’t you wish there was a list of THINGS I WISH I KNEW BEFORE SIGNING for a new job? Or a list of things you can try to negotiate for? Or a list of financial tools/investments to be aware of/a to do list of sorts for graduation?
Here it is!
You’ve landed your dream job, what kind of things can you negotiate for as additional incentives to take the job and put YOU in the driver’s seat?
THINGS TO NEGOTIATE FOR:
-State License reimbursement
-ABEM Board Fee reimbursement
-DEA fee reimbursement
-Annual CME allowance
-Moving stipend
-Student loan repayment
-Sign on bonus
-Scrub stipend or reimbursement
-White coat stipend or reimbursement
Additional questions to ask:
-Does the job include life insurance? Is it enough? Should I get underwritten for my own life insurance independently in addition to the job’s coverage, while I’m young and have fewer preexisting conditions.
-Is there long term disability insurance coverage? Does it even meet my income needs or should I purchase an additional policy (which typically needs to be done before joining a group policy.)
-Is the disability only long term or does it include short term disability coverage? Would pregnancy be covered? How long do you have to be on the short term policy before a pregnancy would be covered?
-Is there a 401K? Is there any matching component?
-Is there a sick-call schedule for the group?
-What are the minimum hours to maintain benefits if you ever need to go part time
We will keep updating this list as topics come up.
