US division graduation 2023
May 22, 2023Happy Birthday, Mark!
June 5, 2023It is hard to believe that this academic year is coming to its end. Today was the last full conference day of 2022-2023 academic year in Clark auditorium.
8:00 – 9:00 Endocrine Disorders Jeopardy Game
The day started with a competition between residents vs attendings team. Our stellar resident Dr. Wesley Goodman-Levy decided to put all of us through a thorough review of Endocrine disorders in the format of Jeopardy game. Admittedly, it is much more fun than going over slides from Rosen’s
At the end of the hour, the attendings won by a small margin. Hopefully it gave the residents a stimulus to better themselves. Read Rosen, guys!!!
9:00 – 10:00 Joint EM-Trauma conference
Joint conferences with other departments are always very useful for all involved parties, because during frank discussions of the cases both departments have a chance to look at the patient care through each others’ eyes and to better understand the needs of the other team.
Today we reviewed few cases and had a fantastic discussion that illustrated multiple aspect of patient care.
10:00 – 10:40 Tox Chalk-Talk: Sulfonylureas and Diabetic Drugs by Dr. Richard Hamilton
Our beloved chairman Dr. Hamilton presented his chalk-talk in an unusual nowadays format. Instead of banging through the PP slides, he used a white board and a marker with a twist (he did it on his iPad). This certainly kept everyone’s attention to what he had to say. It was a fantastic lecture with a deep understanding of pathophysiology, biochemistry and pharmacology, and a real treat to follow all this information presented in an easy to follow way.
Thank you, Dr. Hamilton for the old school teaching!
11:00 – 11:30 DKA Chalk-Talk by Dr. Steve Carroll
Following the newly revived tradition of not using PP slides, Dr. Carroll went even more traditional and used a plain paper poster board. Amazingly, the “novelty effect” carried, and the residents and attendings kept very focused on the topic and extremely engaged with the speaker.
Thank you, Steve, for the excellent interactive discussion!
Hmm, it seems like we all need to start varying our presentation styles. As they say, everything new is actually a well-forgotten old.
11:30 – 12:00 Implementation of Pediatric EM US curriculum by Dr. Leslie Crosby
Well, after the attendings did their job teaching residents the nuts and bolts of EM, it was time for the fellows to step in. Our US fellow Dr. Leslie Crosby told us about how pediatric EM fellows lack the training in POCUS during their fellowship. She went over the specific barriers that they face in terms of US training and current literature specifying the pressing need for Peds EM physicians to be well-versed in POCUS.
Since EM folds are generally problem-solvers and doers, and Leslie is in particular interested in everything US, she has decided to fill in the gaps and study whether Peds EM fellows after doing US rotation at Crozer, feel more competent performing POCUS at the bedside at AI DuPont ED, and whether it is at all feasible to implement a mandatory US rotation for all Peds EM fellows.
Her study showed overwhelmingly convincing results, that even a 2-week US rotation at Crozer ED significantly increases their competence and confidence in using POCUS in their ED. And much more, it shows their enthusiasm in learning the basics of POCUS.
Thank you, Leslie, for educating us on such an important topic!
12:00 – 13:00 Sideline Emergencies by Sports Medicine Fellowship PD at Crozer Dr. Kevin DuPrey
Exciting news! We are starting a Sports Medicine rotation for our residents in July 2023. So it is logical that implementation of Sports Medicine into our curriculum is a welcome and timely addition.
Sports injuries are common, and EM docs are the first ones to encounter and treat them. Today Dr. DuPrey talked about the approach to these injuries: diagnosis, special considerations, and treatment, and more importantly the follow up with Sports Medicine folks. He covered various injuries, starting from head injuries to cardiac arrests on the field.
Overall, it was a very productive day. I hope everybody enjoyed the content and our fantastic speakers. We are looking forward to the upcoming Wilderness Day, Mock Oral Boards, and the New Intern Summer Core Curriculum.
